Monster Stories

Today, two facilitators combined their classes and created a project that included the arts and computer technology. They were shown a picture of an iguana on the computer. They were asked to write a story starting with "One day I was walking on the road when a big monster appeared." They were asked to finish the story and then either draw a picture using the program Paint or they could draw one on a piece of paper.

Marylene Gaston shared her story as an example of how to write creatively.

THE DAY I BECAME AFRAID

One day I was walking down the road when suddenly a big monster appeared. I was so thrilled and perturbed by its appearance that I started to get cold sweat. I also started thinking on the spot: What step should I take? I wondered how I was going to cross this monster to get home.

I started praying hard so God would send someone my way, but unfortunately no one came. I began building up some courage and I thought that if I did not interfere with it, it should not harm me. I went reluctantly step by step until I was just one step away. I then realized it was "Iggy" an iguana - our friend in the wild life. We were taught to protect them and do not harm them. I passed it by and then went to call the Forestry Department to let them know there was a big iguana down the road.

One day I was walking on the road when suddenly a big monster appeared. I screamed and shouted for help! People came running and one person said "that's not a monster. That's an iguana. It is a kind of big Lizard". "It is still a monster", I said. "Stop being foolish", someone replied. "It's won't bite anyone." I held it and it didn't bite me.

One day I was walking on the road when suddenly a big monster appeared. I ran to the village. A lady was going to tell me something. I just passed her very fast. Another person told me that is bad manners. I went back and she told me that's not a monster. I said "it is not a monster?" Then she told me it was a friendly iguana.

One day I was walking on the road when suddenly a big monster appeared. It looked hideous, scaly and long. I shouted for help but the creature was not that scary once I got to know it. Then help came and they captured it and let it go free into the wild. I wonder what happened to the beast. I wonder.

One day I was walking down the road and suddenly a big monster appeared. I was shocked and in fear. I screamed and everybody in the neighborhood came running. I ran as fast as possible. Whilst running, I fell and the monster was approaching me. When the monster was closer I saw it was two iguana stuck together. Suddenly I was closer to my home and I thought I was safe, but I was not. At home I went to my mom's room but she was not home. I started to cry.

The Iguana I saw

One day I was walking down the road when suddenly a big monster appeared. I was so afraid that I fainted. Someone was watching and picked me up and took me home. My mother ran to see the monster. She realized that it was an iguana. She called the Forest Department. They came and took the iguana. It was black and green.

A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS

The kids were placed into groups and given crayons and a blanket sheet of paper and were told to exercise team work creativity and cooperation. This turned out to be great.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

MOTHERS YOU ARE SPECIAL !

Mother's Day is here and the kids at the After school program wanted to show their appreciation for all you Mom's out there . They were busy creating cards to show mom how much they cared.

"M" is for the million things she gave me,
"O" means only that she's growing old,
"T" is for the tears she shed to save me,
"H" is for her heart of purest gold;
"E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
"R" means right, and right she'll always be,
Put them all together, they spell
"MOTHER,"
A word that means the world to me."

Peer Pressure

Kids are learning how to resist peer pressure this week and they are enjoying it. They are role playing scenarios where they are being pressured and how to resist it without feeling like they are left out.
How to resist Peer Pressure
  • Say NO and let them know you mean it.
  • Make eye contact.
  • Stand straight.
  • Say how you feel.
  • Don't make excuses.
  • Stick up for yourself.
